Which type to buy?
Laminate
Laminate worktops are the most popular and cost effective. Laminate is a fairly durable material, and is easy to fit and keep clean. Always remember the higher the gloss surface, the more likely it is to show any masking.
Solid Wood
Solid wood worktops are more expensive to buy and to fit, as they require sealing prior to fitting and regular maintenance to keep their appearance. However, they are a popular choice and are easy to create unusual shaped worktops.
Solid Surface
Solid surface worktops such as Encore, Getta Core and Minerelle are popular as they can be jointed and then polished by machine to give an almost invisible join, and they are suitable for creating unusual shaped tops. It is also possible to repair damaged areas and re-polish the tops to remove scratches. You can have sinks moudled into worktop to give an all in on look. However, please note that due to their robust nature, these worktops are more expensive than laminate and require a lengthier installation period.
Granite and Sandstone
Granite and sandstone worktops are the most expensive, but do look fantastic. They do require regular maintenance to stay looking good, and cooking oils can cause permanent stains. They require a longer installation time as they have to be templated after the base units have been installed, then fabricated in a workshop, and finally brought to site to be fitted. Generally there is a week between templating and the tops being fitted.
